Space The Not So Final Frontier

Space The Not So Final Frontier

Of course most of us will remember the famous introduction to Star Trek “Space the final frontier”. I was teaching over the weekend and a question that is often asked of me by student, client and lay person alike is “what make therapy work?” Now, of course, there is no simple answer to that question, indeed depending on who you ask therapy can be effective for a number of reasons. The most accepted one, however, is the relationship between therapist and client is what make it successful or not.

Now what is the key component of that relationship? In my view, and that of many others, is the creation of a safe space for a client to explore themselves and their issues. That space is what allows a person to be honest with themselves about their issues and allows for them to make the necessary changes in order to live their lives the way they want to. As the human condition is limitless, then space is not the final frontier, but rather the human mind is the final frontier. If one explores that, one can truly claim the title of an explorer as no matter how much we learn, there is always more things to discover and none of us will ever know all of the answers. Kind of makes life worth living don’t you think?
