On Death and Dying

On Death and Dying

I have been giving a lot of thought lately to the stresses and strains placed on people when it comes to death and dying. For may people this is a taboo subject that is seldom discussed as it causes too much agitation and upset. We all know that the reality is that we will all die some day, and it is not something that we generally look forward to.

However, it is necessary for our own peace of mind and for our mental health to be as clear as we can about what we want at the end as well as telling the people who matter to us how we feel about them. When people grieve it is often for the things not said or done rather than for the death itself.

I will often tell clients about the importance of acknowledging those people who matter to them. If we do this regularly and are not afraid to talk about death and our end and wishes, this can only be a good thing in the long run. It may not necessarily feel like it at the time, but further down the line it will pay dividends.
