Managing Your Mood

Managing Your Mood

Sometimes when things get too much and we dwell on things, our mood changes.  One way to deal with this is to become aware of when this happens and try to control it, and not let it control you.

Follow some of the points below:-

  1. BECOME ACTIVE

Plan into your week some activity that might lift your mood.  It might be an activity that you used to enjoy or a completely new activity.  Do not wait until you feel like doing these activities, if you are active eventually the taste for life comes back.  Enjoyment is a bonus; to begin with praise you simply for having a go at the activity.

  1. BUILD YOURSELF UP

Take a good look at yourself in the mirror every morning and find something you like about yourself, not negatively but be positive.  Take something different each time you accept how you feel.  Smile every time you pass a mirror, eventually you will get so used to seeing that smiling face that it will be built into you.

  1. IS THERE A MORE REALISTIC WAY OF THINKING

When your mood dips do a ‘slow motion action replay’ of the particular situation.  Then ask yourself ‘Do these thoughts really make sense or are they an exaggeration?’, ‘Is there a more realistic way of thinking in this situation?’

Try to imagine a better way of dealing with the mood, is it logical to feel this way, or can you do something about it?  Maybe you could imagine the stressor with a different soundtrack, a funny song maybe or something that lightens the situation…
