Hypsiphobia Fear of height

Hypsiphobia Fear of height

There are certain fears or phobias that most people would have heard of, a fear of flying for example or a fear of spiders is also a common example. Another such phobia is the pathological and extreme fear of heights. Most people know it as simply that, a fear of heights, but its proper name is Hypsiphobia. It is one of the more common phobias that people suffer with and can affect people in different ways and to different extents.

A person with hypsiphobia can experience a multitude of unpleasant feelings when it comes to dealing with or experiencing heights. Some such feelings include nausea, breathlessness, dizziness, excessive sweating, feeling sick, shaking, heart palpitations, fear of dying, amongst others.

The causes of this are often linked to some form of trauma, such as a child falling from a ladder, or panicking at the top of a slide. In rare occasions, there can be a physiological cause to this problem which is linked to a chemical imbalance in the brain which can cause the symptoms I have outlined above. If you have these symptoms it is always wise to get the all clear from you doctor that your fear is not linked to something more sinister than just the fear itself.

Psychotherapy with hypnosis can prove a very effective way in treating this common phobia.
