Hypnotherapy and Bruxism

Hypnotherapy and Bruxism

Take good care of your teeth and they will take good care of you. This is a message that was drummed into me as a child and it must have worked as I have never had a cavity. There is an issue that comes through the hypno-psychotherapist’s door which has to do with teeth and that is working with Bruxism.

Simply put bruxism is an unconscious grinding of the teeth. This generally occurs when a person is asleep, but it can happen in the waking hours as well. This grinding can cause significant damage to the sufferers teeth and this type of damage often cannot be repaired even by the most skilled dental surgeon.

Stress and tension is one of the most common causes of bruxism. For my part, I assist clients to become more aware and mindful of their stress. Through hypnotherapy a person can gain better control of their stress response and with a better way of dealing with these responses, the symptoms of the bruxism can be diminished. Of course, I also work with the direct treatment of bruxism in addition to the stressors behind it.

Generally speaking this does not require long term therapy and because of this the damage can be slowed or stopped in a reasonably short time.
