Fear For The Future

Fear For The Future

I wonder if you felt it, there is a sense of foreboding in the air. Perhaps, you have felt it so long now that it seems like it is now the norm rather than the exception. There is fear in the air, and this is a fear of tomorrow and what it will bring. Now these posts are A-political, so I will not be espousing my personal political views in it. However, I am seeing more and more clients who have a genuine sense of dread and fear as to what is to come.

It is, of course, perfectly natural to have a slight trepidation about the future, as the future is an unknown quantity. Events, however, at the moment have caused many people to question just what sort of future they have to look forward to. Whether it it Brexit or who wins the American Presidential Election, many people feel as though the ground that they always believed they had has been eroded away.

For my clients, they are hoping that therapy can give them answers to some of the big questions of the day. Which, sadly, it cannot. However, what it can do is help to remind them of their own resiliency. Being reminded of this, also reminds them that all people have this ability, and that when things go wrong, people generally find a way to get out of harms way and become stronger. So as FDR said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”.
