Championing in Therapy
IÂ highlight this skill here due to its critical importance for the coaching relationship. We have already stated that a coachâs job is to be the clientâs number one fan, and championing is a way to demonstrate this and to support the client in their endeavours.
This is where a professional coach is most like a sports coach. Imagine a football coach encouraging his players at half time, or a Davis Cup coach during the deciding rubber, or a Ryder Cup captain during the final round.
This action can even be likened to fans supporting their team: âCome on you Spursâ.
How wonderful it will be for your clients to have someone supporting the like this! However, this may feel unnatural, both to you and them: so practise!
