Blogger Fined For Claiming Cancer Cure
Cancer, the word itself fills people with dread. For many the word is the same as death. It causes fear and despair like possible no other disease. It will effect one in three of us here in the United Kingdom, which in itself is a fairly frightening statistic. Whilst hypnotherapy has been shown to assist people in life improvement who suffer with cancer (positive attitude, maintaining appetite, etc) I have always told my students to never claim to treat and certainly never claim to cure cancer.
In Australia, a blogger has been fined £240000 for claiming that she cured her own brain cancer with a course of Ayurvedic medicine, oxygen therapy and a gluten and refined sugar-free diet. This would have been quite impressive, if it weren’t for the fact that she never had cancer. The claims of this 25 year old made her a tidy sum of money through her online presence and cookbook. Some of the cookbook’s profits were meant to go to charity, but not surprisingly that never happened.
People who suffer with cancer suffer not just physically, but psychologically and emotionally as well. People who exploit that by offering false hope to sufferers practice a particularly loathsome con. Yes perhaps I sound like this is personal, and to an extent it is, I have lost family and friends to cancer and I know how hard they fought, but also how vulnerable they were to any quack who promised a cure. I don’t often offer a straight up or down opinion in my blog, but the fine, in my opinion, was too lenient, I thing a stretch in prison might be just the warning these hucksters need to keep them from praying on those at their most vulnerable.
