Being in the Now is Essential
So much of our time is spent either looking behind us or trying to see into the future, we do not focus on the here and now. For people who practise Mindfulness, you will know about the importance of being present in the now and not worrying or thinking too much of the past or future. This concept is also shared by practitioners of Gestalt Psychotherapy. Many of my clients spend an inordinate amount of time focusing on what was rather than what is.
As I will often tell my clients, there is very little we can do about the past. We can’t change it, we can’t pretend it didn’t happen. The best we can hope for is that we are able to rationalise the past and accept that the past has had an influence on the people we are now. However, if you want to create the future you want, the answer is not in the past, the answer is in the here and now. Because as we change the way we see today and deal with what we need to deal with today, we affect the future. Now this can either be positive or negative depending on how we are living in the now. So I suggest we all take a moment and focus on what is happening now, and make it as palatable as we can in order to make our future bright.
