Back To Work

I don’t know about you, but I am the type of person who learned rather later in life to do the whole self care thing. When I first started in practice, the idea of taking a holiday (other than at Christmas) was an anathema. I would happily go to conferences and have a little down time then, but an actual holiday, NEVER.

Then about 13 years ago I stated ensuring I got at least one break in a year outside of Christmas. I cannot tell you how much that improved my life, but also made me a better therapist. I have just returned from Malta where I took a week out after co-hosting the 10th Annual International Hypno-Psychotherapy Conference. The conference organisation was exhausting, but it all got swept away by having a week with no schedule, no pressure no calls, basically nothing pressing to do.

I now return to the office today bright eyed and ready for all that my clients will bring me. I have been doing my clinical work for almost 30 years, and I have to admit I have not regretted a single day, nor has there been a single day that I have not looked forward to the work that was to come. However, I feel an extra special spring in my step after coming off a break. I strongly recommend it to my professional colleagues as well as my friends and clients you will be so glad you took time for you.
