All great things are simple, and many can be expressed in single words: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.

I admit that this is one of my all time favourite Churchillian quotes. Mainly because it says something so simple with such eloquence. In a therapeutic sense, like in this quote, clients often look for what is in effect a simply construct. They want to. E happy, well, contented, at peace. Much like the simple constructs laid out by Churchill, the things clients want are great but simple. Though the constructs are simple, getting there is not always quite so simple.

To achieve the simple things that both Churchill and my clients aspire to is an arduous journey at times which requires effort and courage. The courage to face up to where a person is in order to get to where they want to go is no small thing. Churchill’s comments are often equated to great courage, I have always believed that those who present themselves for therapy show great courage and fortitude. Therapy, contrary to what some believe is not tea and sympathy, but a process of self exploration for the brave to undertake and to benefit from frank and honest approasial.
