Emotional Honesty
Today’s subject is one near and dear to my heart, I believe that it is one of the most important things a person can do. Emotions are what make us human. They can be intense, irrational, mind-blowing, but they are what we are. So often in my office, I see people who are unwilling to be honest with their emotions. This emotional dishonesty does not favour one gender over another, no class over another, indeed this is an issue which afflicts all people on an equal basis.
What I am referring to is facing your emotions and coming to peace with them. The positive emotions, well they are easy to come to terms with. I am talking about the emotions which make us uncomfortable, the emotions which scare us, the emotions which prick things in us from our past.
If one is honest about one feels and is able to express it, this is a sign of true emotional intelligence. Being able to look at the “negative” as well as the “positive” gives a person true insight into the self. If that insight is utilised correctly, a person can achieve a truly balanced and happy life. Being emotionally honest does not require a therapist, or even a best friend or lover, it requires a special unique relationship with yourself. After all, who is a greater ally of you than you? The being said, do not be afraid to share your emotional honesty with the people you care about most.
