Championing in Therapy

Championing in Therapy

I highlight this skill here due to its critical importance for the coaching relationship. We have already stated that a coach’s job is to be the client’s number one fan, and championing is a way to demonstrate this and to support the client in their endeavours.

This is where a professional coach is most like a sports coach. Imagine a football coach encouraging his players at half time, or a Davis Cup coach during the deciding rubber, or a Ryder Cup captain during the final round.

This action can even be likened to fans supporting their team: “Come on you Spurs”.

How wonderful it will be for your clients to have someone supporting the like this! However, this may feel unnatural, both to you and them: so practise!
