The extreme and irrational fear of meat is called Carnophobia. This phobia is not only restricted to vegetarians, it also affects a variety of people for many different reasons. This phobia has become more frequent in western society. A case in point is, PETA an animal rights group is dedicated to organizing publicity campaigns that exposes the suffering of the animals we eat, as well as their killing for their fur or other animal by-products. For other people, the fear of meat might be caused by eating improperly prepared meat in the past that may have made the sufferer sick.

Many people with Carnophobia become vegetarians or vegans in order to avoid of the unpleasantness of handling and eating meat every day.

People with Carnophobia can be uptight when they are in a social of formal gatherings where meat is served. In certain instances vegetarians or vegans become isolated from their family and friends because of their dietary needs. Additionally, there are some who suffer with Carnophobia who are able to adjust to being around the substance while others will avoid gatherings that will feature animal proteins.

Symptoms may include queasiness and disgust when faced with meat aromas. Others may feel sick in public places where meat is being cooked and served. Systematic desensitisation is a very effective treatment for this issue, where hypnosis is used as the vehicle of the therapy delivery.
